A soft tissue graft is used to replace missing and/or receded gum tissue.
Gum recession can occur for a variety of reasons including aggressive tooth brushing or periodontal disease. If left untreated this may result in exposed tooth roots which not only effect our presentation and appearance (as teeth appear longer) but also become sensitive to hot or cold foods and liquids. Soft tissue grafting can be used to cover roots or develop gum tissue where it is missing.
Throughout this procedure, your dentist will carefully extract tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed tooth root, providing a natural solution to any missing gum tissue or exposed tooth roots. This technique can be used for one tooth, several teeth, or even your entire gum line.
Moreover, this procedure can help prevent and reduce further gum recession which may result in bone loss. In some cases, it can also cover exposed tooth roots to protect them from decay and disease which will decrease their sensitivity and enhance the aesthetics of your gum line and smile.
If your experiencing sensitivity, a recession of the gum line or feel your teeth are too long and exposed, contact our friendly team to arrange a soft tissue grafting appointment.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
