Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that attacks gum tissue and the bone that secures the teeth in place.  In its early stages, periodontal disease is known as gingivitis and is often asymptomatic. However, if you are experiencing red, swollen or shiny gums, bad breath or bleeding when brushing or flossing you may have gingivitis or periodontal disease. Gingivitis is a treatable condition that can be reversed, however as it develops the bacteria begins to attack surrounding ligaments and bone. This stage is known as periodontitis. Although it cannot be reversed it can effectively be treated to prevent further spreading.

If left unchecked periodontitis can result in numerous complications including:

  • Tooth abscesses
  • Infection or abscesses in the soft tissue
  • Infection of the jaw bone
  • Loosening of the teeth

Periodontitis is also the largest cause of tooth loss among adults and has been linked to other conditions including diabetes, heart disease and stroke.1

Key benefits of treatment:

  • Regular dental cleaning and periodontal probing will ensure healthy gums and bone support to protect your gums from periodontal disease and further discomfort and medical complications.
  • Most people feel that they only have to worry about their teeth and fail to understand that gum health is equally important. At Canberra Implant and Periodontal Centre we have a well established Periodontal Maintenance Program that will help manage all your periodontal needs.
