Scale and Root Planing

Scale and root planing is a non-surgical periodontal procedure that involves the cleaning of the gum pockets to prevent the development and spreading of periodontal (gum) disease.

When the gum tissue is inflamed, gum pockets become deeper and they lose the bone connections inside. As these pockets become deeper they are more difficult to clean and more susceptible to retaining plaque causing, ongoing destruction of both the ligament and supporting bone of your teeth.

What’s involved?

Root planing is the cleaning of the root surfaces of your teeth. This allows a healthier, smoother surface for the gum tissue to firmly reattach to - helping prevent the redevelopment of gum, tooth and bone issues. This procedure is designed to reduce bacterial loads under the gums. 

As this procedure goes deeper than a regular clean local anaesthetic may be employed to numb your mouth, to ensure your treatment is comfortable and stress free. Depending on the severity of the gum disease you may require one or more sections (quadrants) of the mouth to be treated with scaling and root planing.
